Liberty & Prosperity
Liberty & Prosperity is a tax-exempt, 501 (c)(3) education organization established in
Somers Point in 2003. We take our name from “Liberty and Prosperity”,
New Jersey’s motto since 1776. New Jersey’s flag depicts two Roman
goddesses standing together. Liberty holds a wooden pike draped with
a red cap. According to legend, that cap was worn by slaves in ancient
Rome who had gained their freedom. Prosperity holds a cornucopia, or “horn of plenty”.
We sponsor various activities in Somers Point to teach residents and
visitors the meaning and relevance those words and symbols.
We hold breakfast discussions every Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at
Sal’s Café, 501 New Road, in Somers Point. There is no obligation to
attend the first two meetings other than order and pay for your own
breakfast off the menu, and tip your server.
We maintain the LibertyAndProsperity.com website, as well as Facebook,
Twitter (X), and Instagram pages.
Every September 4, we hold a ceremony to remember local Barbary War
hero Richard Somers in the park by his statue and mural by 801 Shore
Road in Somers Point.
Every July 4, we distribute postcards containing what Abraham Lincoln
called the “sentiments” of America’s Declaration of Independence:
We these truths to be self-evident: We are all created equal. We are
endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. Among these
are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To secure these
rights, governments are instituted, exercising their just powers from
the consent of the governed…”
